Vocabulary Words Health: includes our BISEPS. Health is not absolute, it is a range of states within the six components. One is striving for balance. Wellness: A type of lifestyle in which we choose behaviors that promote good health and prevent disease which strives for a high quality of life.

California Study California Study: Long term study Scientists looked at risky behaviors and determined behaviors that will lead to a long healthy life. Major health hazard in society was lifestyle choices. 4 factors of life expectancy: HEREDITY, ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH CARE, LIFESTYLE – 50-60%

CDC 6 -Centers for disease control and prevention established 6 categories of risk behaviors 1. Behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries. (Risky Behaviors) 2. Tobacco use. 3. Alcohol and other drug use. (ATOD) 4. Sexual behaviors that result in HIV infection, STI, and unintended pregnancies. 5. Diet choices that contribute to disease. 6. Lack of physical activity.

Understanding the Risks- How do the leading causes of death connect to the CDC 6? Leading Causes of Death for All Ages 1. Heart Disease 2. Cancer 3. Stroke Leading Causes of Death for Teens 1. Accidents 2. Homicide 3. Suicide

Lifestyle Factors: Identified habits that affect people’s overall health, happiness, and length of life. (California Study) 1. Getting 8-10 hours of sleep each night. 2. Eat a healthy breakfast each day. 3. Eat a variety of nutritious foods. 4.Being physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. 5. Maintaining a healthy weight.

Lifestyle Factors Continued…. 6. Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. 7. Abstaining from sexual activity until an monogamous relationship. 8. Managing stress. 9. Maintaining positive relationships. 10. Practicing safe behaviors to prevent injuries.

“KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT EQUAL BEHAVIOR CHANGE” What does this statement mean? What are the connections between “knowledge does not equal behavior change” and “The real test is when you walk out the door”? Just because you know what you are suppose to change – Does not mean that you are going to change it EX: Smoking: Alcohol
