Matter

Vocabulary Matter – something that has mass and volume Weight – the pull of gravity on matter Mass - - the amount of atoms Atoms – a small component of an element

Vocabulary Volume – the amount of space an object takes Gram – a unit for measuring weight. It is about the same as a paper clip Kilogram – a unit for measuring weight. It is about the same as your math book. 1000 grams equals 1 kilogram.

Vocabulary Solid – matter that is a uniform substance that has a definite volume and holds its own shape Liquid – matter that has a definite volume but not definite shape, it takes the shape of its container Gas - matter that has no definite volume or shape

Vocabulary Losing Energy (heat) Freezing – changing from a liquid to a solid Condensation – changing from a gas to a liquid Gaining Energy (heat) Melting – changing from a solid to a liquid Evaporation – changing from a liquid to a gas

Vocabulary Physical Change – a change in form (shape, size, phase) but not identity Chemical Change – Changes into a new substance Signs of chemical change: unexpected change in : color energy – heat or light bubbles

Vocabulary Reactants – two or more substances that are put together Reaction – a change because of an event

Physical Change Chemical change No new substance Change in size or shape Change in phase (solid, liquid, gas) You can reverse it Unexpected color Heat or light Bubbles You can not reverse it

Vocabulary Dissolve - mix into Solution – a mixture

Vocabulary Acid - compound usually having a sour taste and containing hydrogen with an extra proton Base – a substance that takes up protons Acid in cabbage juice Base in cabbage juice
