The Faculty Role in Developing the University of Kentucky Dynasty A Blueprint for UK Undergraduate Students Derek R. Lane, Ph.D. Senior Associate Dean College of Communication & Information UK 101 Faculty Presentation October 7, 2013

What is the difference between a Dream and a DYNASTY? 77.5 MILES!

The University of Kentucky owns a rich tradition of excellence in collegiate athletics, both in the teams it fields and in the student- athletes that participate. At the University of Kentucky, the Athletics Association sponsors 22 varsity sports that compete at the Division I level in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The UK Dynasty Eight (8) National Championships in college basketball. A cross-country national championship. An eight-time NCAA individual champion in gymnastics. An Olympic medalist in track and field. Nineteen (19) National Championships in Cheerleading

The Dynasty

The UK Dynasty UK is one of only seven universities in the U.S. that have programs in agriculture, engineering, law, medicine, and pharmacy on a single campus The William T. Young Library, opened in 1998, already has assumed a position among the worlds leading research libraries; its book endowment is the largest among public universities. The library measures 365,000 square feet and seats 4,000 people. UKs $1.4 billion annual budget makes it Kentuckys ninth largest corporation. Students represent 117 countries, all 50 states and every county in Kentucky. Since 1997, UK's enrollment has grown by 2,700 to over 28,094 students. This enrollment, combined with UKs 11,000-person workforce, makes UK the equivalent of Kentuckys sixth largest city

Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education The 2000 Carnegie Classification includes all colleges and universities in the United States that are degree-granting and accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education. U.S. News & World Report uses the Classification to organize its influential college rankings. Some governmental bodies consult the categories when making decisions about institutional funding. Some foundations target certain grant programs to institutions based on the Classification.

The UK Dynasty Developing the UK Dynasty into the new millennium begins with an understanding of what it means to be an undergraduate student at a research university and the role of the faculty member in reaching the dream and the meeting the challenge! You know the difference between a dream and a dynasty…will you accept the challenge to continue the dynasty as an undergraduate student?
