Henry V, Mary I, Elizabeth I The Reformation Henry V, Mary I, Elizabeth I

Do you think the spread of Lutheranism and other Protestant religions (non-Catholic Christians) caused conflict? What kinds? Civil wars? Country against country?

We know that religious differences caused conflict between the Catholic Church and Protestants. Could religion also cause political differences?

Reformation In England The Reformation began10 years after the start of the Reformation in main Europe The Reformation in England began due to a political quarrel between the king and the pope Religious beliefs did not play a part of the Reformation in England until later.

Henry VIII Belonged to the Tudor family Henry VIII Ruled England 1509 to 1547 His first wife, Catherine, had no son but did have a daughter, Mary (bloody Mary or Mary I or Mary Tudor) Henry wanted to have a son, fell in love with Anne Boleyn, and Henry asked the pope to annul his marriage to Catherine so that he could marry Anne Catholic Church did not believe in divorce and the pope refused Henry’s request.

Catherine and Anne

Well that escalated quickly… Henry’s plan Henry had the Archbishop of Canterbury end his marriage to Catherine Henry then married Anne Boleyn The pope excommunicated Henry Henry had Parliament pass the Act of Supremacy—made the king the head of the new Church of England Henry ordered all bishops and priest in England to accept the Act of Supremacy and those who refused were killed Henry seized the Catholic church’s land and gave to the nobles to keep them loyal

Take that Pope!

Henry’s Story is FAR from over!

That woman from Alice & Wonderland looks suspiciously like me. Mary I & Her Rule Church of England became known as the Anglican Church Mary became Queen after Henry’s death. Mary was Catholic and restored the Catholic church in England She arrested/killed Protestants who opposed her More than 300 Protestants were burned at the stake and she was named “Bloody Mary” OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

Under Elizabeth I’s rule… Sir Francis Drake (An English admiral & slave trader) circumnavigated the globe, making it to California claiming it for Elizabeth. England defeated the Spanish Armada with the help of Sir Frances Drake, and began to rise as a world power. King Phillip of Spain was not happy. William Shakespeare wrote his play, Richard III. What was happening during Elizabeth’s reign when the Renaissance was at its height? These things may have made the headlines…if Newspapers existed.
