I cannot drink warm milk. A day without sunshine is like night. Simple sentences must only have one subject-verb combination but it does not mean that a subject could not have one or more element. I cannot drink warm milk. A day without sunshine is like night. Reality continues to ruin my life. Sarah and Mike both hate eggs. James is good at catching and throwing a ball. Purple: subject Blue: verb (predicate)

Directions: Copy the sentences. Underline the subject. Circle the verb. Can you give me your blanket? Both brother and sister play computer games after school. The bus arrived late.

I used to jog, but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass. A COMPOUND SENTENCE IS MADE UP OF TWO SIMPLE SENTENCES AND JOINED BY COMMA AND A CONJUNCTION Conjunction = FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Yet, So) I used to jog, but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass. I like English, and I like Math. My dog ate my homework, or I threw it in the garbage.

A COMPLEX SENTENCE HAS A DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT CLAUSE. I burned dinner but not the cake. She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged. When she was younger, she believed in fairytales. Although my cousin invited me, I chose not to go to the party. Notice the subordinate conjunctions! These indicate dependent clauses! after although as because before even if even though if in order that once provided that rather than since so that than that though unless until when whenever where whereas wherever whether while why

A COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE IT IS A COMPOUND SENTENCE WITH A DEPENDENT CLAUSE. My father and I went to the movie that I had been wanting to see, and then we went to the restaurant near the theater. Before they were friends, Louis and Julie knew Aimee, but they didn't realize that they knew her until they met.  Kate doesn’t like cartoons because they are loud, so she doesn’t watch them.

From Frederick Douglass… I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant. I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. Compound-complex Complex Compound Complex Complex Simple
