Monday 13th May – Thursday 16th May Year Six SATs briefing 2019 Monday 13th May – Thursday 16th May

The SATs What are they? Why do children sit them? What do they mean?

Timetable for the week * Writing is teacher assessment based, due in by the end of June

Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar 20 spellings – giving up to 20 marks A short answer booklet taking 45 minutes – giving up to 50 marks, involving the usual kind of grammar expectations Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar

Mathematics Arithmetic Test 30 minute test involving written calculations, fractions and percentages Reasoning Tests 2 x 40minute papers involving all Maths strands in word problem/ using and applying type situations

Reading Comprehension A 1 hr test with 3 texts to read and answer questions upon. Questions and texts range from easier, more accessible language, to difficult texts with in depth answers required. 50 marks are available. Reading Comprehension

Writing All teacher assessment based Writing from across the year Uses interim frameworks to make judgements Handwriting and spelling are really important Judgement made towards end of June

The SATs – Reporting Results Results come out in July Reports will show: a raw score (number of raw marks awarded) a scaled score confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard 100 scaled score = met Y6 expectations. NO FORMAL ‘EXCEEDING’ MEASURE… however, if your child gains a scaled score of 110 – you can consider them as gaining a ‘higher score’ in the assessments

To meet the national standard pupils have to achieve somewhere around the following figures : 43/70 - SPAG 28/50 – Reading 61/110 – Maths Writing – teacher assessed – working/ at/ greater depth.

At the higher standard (110 scaled score) it’s really tough Need to get around the following marks on the test (again highest raw score shown): Reading 39/50 Maths 98/110 Spag 61/70 To put this into context - in 2018, only 10% of children nationally gained the higher standard in Reading, Writing, Maths combined together In individual subjects, national achievement was at 24% Maths, 28% Reading , 34% SPAG

Ways to support your child Study books – please encourage your child to use them! Feel free to download practise tests (but no later than 2015 please as we use them for assessment) available from satspapers.org, but remember these are based on the old curriculum and are different to the tests your child will be taking Spelling investigations Good night’s rest/relaxing weekend/ brain food breakfast prior to tests!
