To conjugate : With Verbs, conjugation refers to how a verb changes to show a different person & number, tense, or mood.

¿Qué es un verbo? a word that is 1- usually the grammatical center of a predicate and 2- expresses an act, occurrence, or state of being and 3- that in various languages CHANGES (as for agreement with the subject or for tense)

to plus a verb ¿Qué es un infinitivo? En inglés : An infinitive is a verb consisting of the word to plus a verb ( it’s a verb in the simplest form : no subject) to be Do we say I to be …. NO we say I am to speak, to eat, to write……

¿Qué es un infinitivo? En español , INFINITIVES are also a verb in its simplest form : no subject are recognized by their ending. Spanish infinitives end in hablAR =to speak comER =to eat escribIR =to write

When we study verbs you will learn that 1- verbs have a STEM and an ENDING HABL(STEM) AR(ENDING) 2- when we CONJUGATE a verb, First, separate the stem from the ending Second, we give the verb different endings depending on the subject 3- verbs have TENSES : present-past – future, etc 4- VERBS have MOODS : indicative, imperative, etc.. 5- verbs have PATTERNS 6- verbs are either REGULAR(follow the same pattern) or IRREGULAR(follow a different pattern)

Our first verb to study is SER =to be SER is an ER ending verb but SER is an IRREGULAR verb. Ser is irregular because Does NOT follow the pattern of REGULAR ER verbs You must memorize the forms of the verbs

the conjugation of SER SIINGULAR PLURAL YO NOSOTROS/AS Tú VOSOTROS/AS ÉL,ELLA, USTED ELLOS,ELLAS, USTEDES SOMOS SOY SOIS ERES ES SON 1- separate the stem “S” and discard the ER ending 2-ADD the new endings for each subject.

USES OF SER ÉL ES mi hermano. (He is my brother.) 1- ORIGIN = SUBJECT + SER CONJUGATION + DE + PAĺS YO SOY DE PUERTO RICO 2- TO IDENTIFY PEOPLE AND THINGS ¿QUIÉN ES ÉL? (Who is he?) ÉL ES mi hermano. (He is my brother.) ¿QUÉ ES? (What is it?) ES UN MAPA DE ESTADOS UNIDOS. (It is a map of the U.S.)

USES OF SER use the verb SER + preposition DE or POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES POSSESSION ( WHAT BELONGS TO SOMEONE) To express possession in Spanish you use the verb SER + preposition DE or POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES Whose book is it? ¿De quién ES el libro? It IS Mary’s book. = El libro ES DE MARY Whose are they? = ¿ De quien son ? They are the girl’s pencils. = Los lápices son de la chica. She IS MY SISTER. = ELLA ES MI HERMANA. There is absolutely no (apostrophe) ‘S en español.

On a side note When DE is followed by the definite article EL (as in el libro de el estudiante) The two words DE + EL are combined to form DEL (as in el libro DEL estudiante) DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH LA – LOS or LAS .

USES OF SER TO EXPRESS PROFESSION or OCCUPATION She is a teacher. My father is a dentist. Ella es maestra. Mi padre es dentista. Unlike English, in Spanish , we do not use the INDEFINITE ARTICLE UN/UNA after SER before a PROFESSION UNLESS THERE IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROFESSION. Ella ES UNA BUENA maestra.
