Essential Question: What ideals did early Americans value and how did that shape the face of our country and culture?

Elements of fiction power point

Non-fiction is not imagined. It depicts real events. What is fiction? A work of fiction is created in the imagination of its author. The author invents the story and makes up the characters, the plot or storyline, the dialogue, and sometimes even the setting. A fictional work does not claim to tell a true story. Non-fiction is not imagined. It depicts real events.

What is a narrative? Narratives are works that provide an account of connected events either actual or imaginary. To put it simply, a narrative is a story. There are many types of literature that are considered narratives, including novels, dramas, fables, folk tales, myths, short stories, and poetry.

What are the five elements of fiction? Setting is the time and place in which the events of a literary work occur. Plot is the sequence (order) of events in a story. (beginning, middle, end) Characters are the people, animals, or beings in a work. Point of view is the relationship of the narrator or storyteller to the story. Types are: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person limited or 3rd person omniscient—all knowing. 1st Person: uses I, me, we. 2nd Person: uses you or your. 3rd person: use he, she, it, or they. Conflict, which is the struggle between opposing forces in the plot of a story. This struggle can occur between a character and an outside force, such as another character, society, nature, or fate. It can also take place within a character who is faced with conflicted feelings or indecision about how to act. Man v. man, man v. self, etc.

What is theme? The theme is the main idea or message a literary work conveys. What is the moral of the story or life lesson?

Types of characters in fiction Protagonist - The protagonist is the central person in a story, and is often referred to as the story's main character. He or she (or they) is faced with a conflict that must be resolved. The protagonist may not always be admirable (e.g. an anti-hero); nevertheless s/he must command involvement on the part of the reader, or better yet, empathy. Antagonist - The antagonist is the character(s) (or situation) that represents the opposition against which the protagonist must contend. In other words, the antagonist is an obstacle that the protagonist must overcome.
