4 Fiction vs nonfiction Non-Fiction: writing based on facts, real events, and real people

5 Fiction vs nonfiction Fiction: short stories or novels that describe imaginary events and people

7 Fairy Tales and Fables Fairy Tales- A children’s story about magical and imaginary beings and lands Fables- A short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying (communicating) a moral.

8 ~ Short Story ~ Folklore Myths & Legends

9 Folklore and Myths Folklore: A collection of short stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. These stories are about animals and people, of cultural myths, jokes, songs, tales and even quotes Myths: are a traditional story that may answer life’s difficult questions, such as the start of the world and/or of a people.

10 Legends Legends: A story or a narrative that lies between myth and historical fact and which is about a particular figure or person

12 Elements of fiction PLOT: ALL THE EVENTS THAT HAPPEN IN A STORY, WE ORGANIZE THESE EVENTS USING THE PLOT DIAGRAM: CLIMAX RISING ACTION FALLING ACTION Exposition RESOLUTION

13 Elements of fiction Exposition Elements of Plot:
Exposition: the beginning of a story that tells us the setting (when and where), introduces the characters (people or animals in the story), provides background information, and gives point of view (who is telling the story) Exposition

14 Elements of fiction Point of View: who is telling the story? First Person: Narrator participates in the story (I, We, Me) Second Person: very rarely used, narrator is talking about the reader (you)

15 Third Person Point of View (Pov)
Third Person: narrator is not in the story, they are an outside voice (she, he, they, Jackson) - Objective: The narrator tells the story without any inside information into the character’s thoughts or feelings - Limited: The narrators knows the inner feelings or thoughts of a limited amount of characters (not all) - omniscient: The narrator knows the inner thoughts or feelings of all characters

16 Elements of fiction Elements of plot: Rising action: a series of events where the conflict (main problem) develops or increases RISING ACTION

17 ELEMENTS OF FICTION Conflict: What is the main problem? Types of conflict: Character vs. character: A character struggles with another character, “good guy” vs. “bad guy”

18 ELEMENTS OF FICTION Conflict: What is the main problem? Types of conflict: Character vs. nature: A character struggles a force of nature (tornado, flood, animal attack)

19 ELEMENTS OF FICTION Conflict: What is the main problem? Types of conflict: Character vs. society: A character struggles against society, social traditions, politics

20 ELEMENTS OF FICTION Conflict: What is the main problem? Types of conflict: Character vs. self: A character has an internal struggle (tough decisions, morals)

21 Elements of fiction Elements of plot: Climax: the turning point of the story, this is usually the most intense part of the story CLIMAX RISING ACTION

22 ELEMENTS OF FICTION ELEMENTS OF PLOT: FALLING ACTION: A SERIES OF EVENTS DIRECTLY AFTER THE CLIMAX, THESE EVENTS HAPPEN BECAUSE OF THE CLIMAX, CONFLICT DECREASES CLIMAX RISING ACTION FALLING ACTION

23 ELEMENTS OF FICTION ELEMENTS OF PLOT: Resolution: the “loose ends” are tied up, does not necessarily mean the conflict is solved, but there is some type of closure. CLIMAX RISING ACTION FALLING ACTION RESOLUTION

24 Elements of fiction Theme: the life lesson or big idea the author presents through the story, theme is not directly stated in the text, it must be inferred.

25 Elements of fiction Tone: how the author feels about the subject, this can be found by looking at word choice. Mood: How the reader feels after reading a piece of text.
