Reading Non-fiction Textbooks The following is the method I want you to follow EVERY TIME we read something from the textbook I expect you to write out your responses directly on the text, if it is a copy, or on a separate piece of paper if it is out of our textbook

Reading Non-fiction Textbooks You will be graded on a scale of 0-5 We are going to go over the components of this method, and then we will create an example together as a class

Step 1: Take a PEEK P - pictures. Look through your reading and examine the different pictures you see. What could this tell us about the text? E - each heading. What are the headings in the text? What does this text look like it will be about? E - ending. What does the ending look like? K - Know now? What do you know about the text BEFORE even reading anything?

Step 2: Find Key Words Create a list of KEY WORDS in the margins. Must have at least one per sub-heading (smallest section of the text). How do you tell what a key word is? See handout :)

Step 3: Answer Section Questions / Checkpoints Look at the handout you have in front of you. The bolded questions are an example of section questions, or questions that will be answered by the time you finish that section of the text. You will answer these questions with a certain dollar amount - each word is worth 10 cents.

Example! Look at page 6. Let’s follow these steps… 1. PEEK 2. Key words -- I have identified some for you, so write them in the margin. Additionally, write any others you identify in the margins 3. $3.00 summary of the question, “What forms of government could the Founding Fathers choose from?”
