5 There are TWO types of governments:
Limited: The power of the government is limited and peoples’ rights are protected. The people have a responsibility to vote and participate in the selection of government leaders and policy. The people have specific rights that the government can not take away. The government has power granted by the people written in a document (Ex: the Constitution). The government works for the people.

6 There are TWO types of governments:
Unlimited: The power of the government is not limited. The peoples’ rights are not protected, but are at the will of the leader. The people do not have a say in government or policy The people do not have rights. The government can do anything to their citizens. Citizens have no way to protect themselves from the government. The people serve the will of the government

8 What is a citizen? Definition: a native or naturalized member of a state or nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection. How do you become a citizen? Born in a country Go through the citizenship process (varies by country) What is the role of citizens in the government? 11 Absolute Monarchy Ruled by one leader ( a king, queen, or emperor)
Their rule is inherited (passed down) Limited or Unlimited? Rights and Responsibilities: The subjects must follow and obey the ideas and laws made by their king no matter what they are. They have no say in government. King Prince EXAMPLE: Saudi Arabia

Ruler and a constitution (formal plan of government) The subjects are involved in government decisions Ruler is the figurehead of government (represents leadership) but does not have a lot of power Their rule is inherited, but government is appointed or elected Limited or Unlimited? Emperor & Empress EXAMPLE: Japan Rights and Responsibilities: The subjects recognize the Ruler but have a responsibility participate in government by voting for representation and policy. They have rights that are protected.

13 Parliamentary Democracy
Led by a Prime Minister Citizens vote for representatives of a political party in parliament. The parliament majority party appoints a prime minister. Elections can be called at any time. Limited or Unlimited? India's Prime Minister EXAMPLES: India & South Africa Rights and Responsibilities: The citizens have a responsibility participate in government by voting for representation and policy. They have rights that are protected in exchange for following the laws.

Led by a President Chosen by an electoral college or a direct popular vote by the people Elections are held at a certain intervals of time EXAMPLES: USA, France, & South Korea Limited or Unlimited? President Obama President Trump Rights and Responsibilities: The citizens have a responsibility participate in government by voting for representation and policy. They have rights that are protected in exchange for following the laws.

15 Republic Any form of government whose leader or leaders are elected, usually for a specific term of office. Led by elected official(s) – Titles vary Example: Ancient Rome Limited or Unlimited?

16 Communism Rights and Responsibilities: The people (workers) have a duty to work for the good of the government or the good of the majority of workers. The Party dictates all policy and life and the people are required to follow without question. Premier Mao Zedong Led by a Premier or President Leader is appointed through the one-party system Members all belong to one-party and are appointed up through the system. EXAMPLE: China Limited or Unlimited?

17 Military Dictatorship
Ruled by a general or President Ruling person or group usually takes control by Military force, but some are appointed through the ruling system. EXAMPLES: North Korea Limited or Unlimited? Rights and Responsibilities: The Military ruler dictates all aspects life and the people are required to follow without question. The people are not involved in government decisions and are oppressed. Military Dictator

18 Theocracy Led by a religious ruler- priest or other representative of a “higher power” Leader is appointed or said to be chosen by God or another “higher power” Laws are based on the chosen religion EXAMPLE: Iran Limited or Unlimited? Rights and Responsibilities: The Supreme ruler directly speaks to god and makes all decisions on how the people live their life. The people must live according to god’s will and the leaders dictates. The president carry’s out god’s will in government. President and Supreme Ruler
