Digital citizenship project: Cyberbullying By:Avery Johnson

What is Internet safety: Internet safety is very important. Everyone who uses social media should take these precautions to be safe while using the internet. Don’t post private information. (birthday, age, address, phone number, etc.) Don’t post embarrassing or inappropriate pictures of yourself or someone else. Never accept or request to be friends/follow a stranger. Don’t answer private messages from people you don’t know.

Why is digital citizenship important: Digital citizens are people who use the internet or social media. Everyone should be a good, responsible digital citizen. Here are some ways to be a good digital citizen … Post positive things! Don’t be negative. Don’t bully or say mean things over the internet! Think twice before posting a status. Be responsible when using social media!

What is cyberbullying: Cyberbullying is the use of Internet and mobile technologies to harass others. It includes spreading mean rumors, posting embarrassing images, impersonating others, and sending threatening messages. Cyberbullying usually involves a victim, one or more bullies, and one or more bystanders. Victims of cyberbullying may react in a number of ways. Some kids and teens shrug it off; others are more severely affected. They may have low self-esteem, get bad grades, avoid going online or going to school, and change schools.

Signs someone is being cyberbullied: He/she acts frustrated and impatient, or simply acts out more. He/she suddenly avoids formerly enjoyable social situations. Declining grades, loss of interest in schoolwork, or not wanting to go to school. Feelings of helplessness or decreased self esteem. Self-destructive behaviors such as running away from home, harming themselves, or talking about suicide.

Don’t be a stand by! How to stand up: If you witness cyberbullying here are some ways to help… Talk to a parent, teacher, or another adult you trust. Adults need to know when someone is being bullied so they can prevent it. Be kind to the kid being bullied. Show them that you care by trying to include them. Sit with them at lunch or on the bus, talk to them at school, or invite them to do something. Just hanging out with them will help them know they aren’t alone.

I’m being cyberbullied! What Do i do: Tell your parents, teachers, friends, or a trusted adult! You are not alone. Report it to the social media site. Don’t fight fire with fire.

Consequences of cyberbullying: You could be arrested for harassing communications. You could have to go to court and answer to judge. Anger management classes or community service. You could be suspended from school or get in school suspension.

Examples of cyberbullying: Commenting mean things on a status or picture to hurt peoples feelings. “You’re mean and stupid.” Posting things to harm or embarrass others. Spreading rumors online about someone that are not true.

Be a buddy, not a bully!
