Photosynthesis

What is photosynthesis? process of converting the energy in sunlight into stored chemical energy in chemical bonds (sugar) carbon dioxide + water + energy  glucose + oxygen Circle the reactants Put a box around the products

Photosynthesis, continued… Photosynthesis is used by green plants to produce food. Chlorophyll is the green pigment located in the chloroplasts of plant cells. Chlorophyll absorbs energy from sunlight to ignite the chemical reaction that produces glucose.

Making Food vs. Eating Food Autotrophs: organisms that use energy from sunlight or chemical bonds in inorganic substances to make organic compounds (produce their own food). Heterotrophs: organisms that must get energy from food instead of directly from sunlight or inorganic substances (use food prepared by others).

Photosynthesis… There are two types of reactions that occur in photosynthesis. Light dependent reactions Light independent reactions (dark reactions, Calvin cycle)

Photosynthesis… There are three stages of photosynthesis: Energy is captured from sunlight. Light energy is converted to chemical energy, which is temporarily stored in ATP (energy molecule) and the energy carrier molecule NADPH. The chemical energy stored in ATP (energy molecule) and NADPH (energy carrier) powers the formation of organic compounds using carbon dioxide.
