1 Chapter 8 Photosynthesis

2 8.1 Energy and Life Energy needed to: - grow, develop
- move materials around - build new molecules - respond to environmental changes

3 Energy from ATP ATP = Adenosine TriPhosphate

4 Energy is stored in the bond holding the last phosphate
When last bond is broken, energy is released and ADP + P is formed ATP  ADP + P + energy

5 Heterotrophs and Autotrophs
Organisms get energy by: - consuming other living things ( = heterotrophs) - making their own food ( = autotrophs)

6

7 8.2 - Photosynthesis Photosynthesis
= process by which plants, some algae, some bacteria capture sun’s energy and convert it to useable chemical energy. 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Occurs in chloroplast

8

9 Pigments absorb light energy
- main pigment = chlorophyll Occurs in 2 stages: - Light-dependent reactions - Light-independent reactions (aka Calvin cycle)
