Syphilis Kylie Garner and Bayan haidar

Description Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that can have very serious complications when left untreated, but it is simple to cure with the right treatment. Syphilis is divided into stages: Primary, Secondary, Latent, and Tertiary.

Scientific description Large lesions causing the loss of the surface layer of the skin or mucous membrane. ‘The causative organism of venereal syphilis is a slender, coiled, flexible bacterium with regular, tightly wound coils’

Signs and symptoms Primary: generally has a sore or sores at the original site of infection. Normally occur on or around the genitals, around the anus or in the rectum or in or around the mouth. Sores are usually firm, round, and painless. Tertiary: this stage is associated with severe medical problems. A doctor can usually diagnose tertiary syphilis wit the help of multiple tests. It can affect the heart, brain, and other organs in the body. Secondary: skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fever. Symptoms are mild and may not be noticed. Latent stage: no signs or symptoms

cause(s) ~A bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact that starts as a painless sore. ~You can get syphilis by direct contact with a syphilis sore during sex.

Cures Syphilis requires 3 injections, each 1 week apart. Oral antibiotics are given to people with sores on their mouths. If syphilis has advanced to neurosyphilis, treatment with IV penicillin every 4 hours for 10-14 days might be required. Avoid sexual contact until all sores are healed and your doctor allows you.

Worst case scenario ~If untreated, syphilis remains in your body and may begin to damage the internal organs, including the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones, and joints. ~ It may show up many years later of the stages of syphilis.

3 facts Syphilis makes it much easier to get and give HIV. During pregnancy syphilis can be passed from mother to infant in utero through the placenta. ~Syphilis can cause damaging/complications or kill babies if it is passed onto them. Untreated syphilis can cause serious or fatal damage to the brain and heart, and can seriously damage the bones, nerves, ect.
