Abortion Part 2 Learning Objective: To enquire into Christian and Muslim views and teachings on the concept of abortion. I can define the terms quality of life and sanctity of life. I can explain Christian and Muslim teachings for and against abortion. I can evaluate whether sanctity or quality of life is more important.

Sanctity of Life vs. Quality of Life Students need to write down the definitions in their books. Ask how they think this links to abortion. Ask them which one might support abortion and which one might disagree with it. Explain that we will be evaluating at the end of the lesson which one they this is more important. The general well-being of a person in relation to their health and happiness. The value of life depends on how good/satisfying it is. All life is sacred because it is God given. God gives life so only God can take it away.

Christian and Muslim Teachings on Abortion Watch the following clip to introduce the ethical issues surrounding abortion and Christian and Muslim views on this. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01zmk7p

Case Study of Lydia Johnson: Abortion Council As a class we are going to form an abortion council that discusses whether or not the person in our case study should be allowed an abortion. Case Study of Lydia Johnson: 17 years old Has one child already who is 19 months old She is a single mother, the father is absent She lives on her own Group 1: Catholic Christian view Group 2: Church of England view Group 3: Muslim View Give each table a group to research. They have 10 minutes to complete their section of the worksheet. Then create mini-abortion councils with representatives from each group. They need to firstly feedback to the group what their religious group believes about abortion and finish with their verdict on Lydia’s case, approx. 15 mins. Each group will need to complete the relevant section of their worksheet using the research packs provided. As a group you will also need to come to a verdict as to whether Lydia should be allowed an abortion based on your research. You will then join together to share your research and discuss your findings.

Case Study of Lydia Johnson: Abortion Council What do you think? Case Study of Lydia Johnson: 17 years old Has one child already who is 19 months old She is a single mother, the father is absent She lives on her own In your groups now discuss Lydia’s case from your own perspective. You have one minute to see if everyone in the group can come to the same verdict. Get students to stand up in their groups – they can sit down once the group has agreed on a verdict in this case. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLeZBXTJt8E – minute countdown

Christian and Muslim Teachings on Abortion Teaching to allow abortion Teaching to forbid abortion Quick mini-plenary: Ask students to decide whether the quotes are for or against abortion. When they give their choice they need to be able to explain the quote.

Quality of Life So which is more important? Lydia Johnson: 17 years old Has one child already who is 19 months old She is a single mother, the father is absent She lives on her own It will depend on time how you can do this, e.g. class discussion, think pair share, written reflection in books etc. Students should already have discussed these ideas, the idea of this is to draw everything together. In this situation, is the sanctity or quality of life more important? What might a Christian say? What might a Muslim say? What would you say?
