6 Arguments for Euthanasia
1 We should be given the freedom to do whatever we want so long as we do not harm other people 2 If we had a pet that was in pain we would ask a vet to have it put down 3 Euthanasia could save a lot of money 18/11/2018

7 Arguments against Euthanasia
1 Older people who feel that they are a burden on other people may decide to opt for euthanasia 2 Even a very ill person may sometimes recover, but this could not happen if we allowed euthanasia 3 It goes against religious teachings on the sanctity of life 4 People may stop trusting doctors if they think that doctors sometimes end life 5 If we allow some people to have euthanasia it may lead to a slippery slope where older people or disabled people are encouraged or are forced to have euthanasia such as in Hitler’s Germany. This would be called involuntary euthanasia 18/11/2018

8 The View of Islam 18/11/2018

9 The View of Islam There is a Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad told a story of a man who was in so much pain that he took a knife and cut his wrist to bleed to death. The Prophet Muhammad said “Allah said ‘my slave hurried in the matter of his life therefore he does not get to heaven’” 18/11/2018

10 The View of Islam Muslims will also say that this life is a test and if we end it we are unlikely to pass the test. 18/11/2018

11 The View of Islam We are also interfering with God’s plan.
Muslims tell the story of Job. Job is held up as an example of someone who even though he suffered he still believed in God. 18/11/2018

12 The View of Christianity
18/11/2018

13 The View of Christianity
Jesus suffered and did not try to take his life Suffering may be part of God’s plan 18/11/2018

14 The View of Christianity
The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20) make it clear that we cannot take life In the bible in 1 Corinthians 6 Saint Paul said “do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit”. 18/11/2018

15 Law of Double Effect All Muslims and Christians now agree that according to the law of double effect doctors can give pain killers such as morphine to ease pain even if they know that over a period of time such pain killers will lead to the death of the patient 18/11/2018

16 Against Euthanasia For euthanasia

17 For 4 minutes answer the following question
Do you think euthanasia is always wrong?

18 Do you think euthanasia is always wrong?
I think it is debatable because I think it is cruel to let people suffer when we could be helping them. Yes I do. Firstly only God can take away a life. Secondly life is a test and you should not end it. For example if you ended a GCSE test when you came to the hard part you would not pass. No I do not. Firstly it reduces suffering. My second reason is that the person is not hurting anyone else. It is debatable because many people now do it in other countries such as Belgium and Switzerland and it may start here one day as well. No I do not. Firstly it reduces suffering. This is what Jesus would want because he reduced suffering. My second reason is that the person is not hurting anyone else. We allow people to play dangerous sports so long as no one else is hurt

20 What is the teaching of one religion other than Christianity on euthanasia? (4 marks)
Muslims believe that human life is sacred and should not be taken. There is a story (taken from hadith) which Muhammad is supposed to have told about a man who was wounded and was suffering so much that he took a knife and cut his wrist so that he bled to death. Muhammad said that when Allah saw what had happened he said "my slave hurried in the matter of his life therefore he is deprived of the garden". This makes it clear that for Muslims euthanasia is not allowed. Muslims believe that this life including all the suffering is a test and if we try to avoid the test by taking our lives we cannot possibly pass the test. The Qur'an mentions Job as a good example of a man who suffered but who still worshipped God.
