Abortion has been legal in the UK since 1967 when The Abortion Act was passed. A new upper time limit of 24 weeks was introduced in 1990 under The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. 7 Abortion and the Law An abortion may be carried out if one of the following conditions applies: the life or physical health of the mother is at risk the mental health of the mother is at risk the mother’s existing family will suffer there is a reasonable chance that the child will be born with a severe disability

In groups, write on your piece of sugar paper reasons why someone might want to have an abortion. Encourage students to ‘magpie’ each other’s ideas.

12 The Great Abortion Divide
Watch the BBC Panorama Documentary on the issues surrounding abortion. As you listen, write down the arguments for and against abortion that you hear. You won’t have time to watch the whole programme but it will be a good introduction to the arguments for and against ready for next lesson where they will explore religious views surrounding abortion. The BBC panorama documentary is available on Google Drive as it has been taken off youtube. This part of the lesson will allow students to start forming their own ideas.
