10 THE UK LAW ON ABORTION The 1967 law permitted abortions up to the 28 th week of pregnancy in the UK, if two doctors agreed that either: The mother’s life was at risk. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkf9VkdgQQc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkf9VkdgQQc The mother’s physical or mental health would suffer. The child was likely to be physically or mentally disabled. There would be a seriously bad effect on other children in the family.

11 The Act was amended in 1990 to prevent abortions being carried out after 24 weeks of pregnancy. This was because some babies born prematurely had survived. Child born at 21 weeks gestation – survived, is reasonably healthy and has now gone home.

12 TASKS (use the fact sheet to help) 1.Give 3 examples of when a woman may legally have an abortion. 2.What advice would you give? Consider the scenarios and write down how you would advise them in their situation. 3. “Abortion is murder!” Do you agree with this statement? Explain the reasons for your response, what the UK law states and what some Christians believe about abortions. Extension: Create a poster campaign for or against abortions – according to your own personal view
