What Do Academic Advisors Do? We explain and help with: GE requirements and graduation requirements Staying on track for two-year graduation Low grades Understanding rules and policies Referrals to campus resources Any non-major requirements *This is very different to what your community college counselor did*

Community College Counselor Help with classes Degree progress Transferring Financial Aid Can register you in classes Evaluate your transcripts Approve repeats of classes Career Counseling 1-2 minutes - Alyssa

CSUCI Records & Registration Faculty Advisors or Program Advisors Forms Transcripts Registration Records & Registration Faculty Advisors or Program Advisors Academic Advisors Graduation Requirements Major Advising Graduate Studies Center 1-2 minutes - Monica Financial Aid

Academic Advising Model Shared Advising Model Academic Advising (us) Major Advising (Faculty, who you met earlier)

Academic Advising Appointments Scheduled appointments Degree planning, low grades Express Advising Group Workshops Degree Progress Grad Check Student Success Series http://www.csuci.edu/academics/advising/ -Show info on appointments, faculty advisor list and workshop information -Advise them to meet with faculty advisor before they schedule an appointment with us because most of their questions are major related

Major Advising Meet with a Faculty Advisor: Questions about major, including capstone Projected course offerings for major Staying on track for two-year graduation Major course substitutions Research and graduate programs Career options for major Study abroad *You schedule appointments directly with your faculty advisor *

Components of a Degree 120 units, 40 upper-division 70 units from community college; 50 university units (including AP, IB & military) Major General Education (GE) American Institutions Multicultural Perspectives (MP) Foreign Language (“C-” or better) Upper Division GE (UDGE) Electives, if needed Page 3

Upper Division GE - UDGE 9 units required (three courses) One course from each: GE Area B, C and D Must be taken at a CSU

Online University Catalog Policies/Procedures Programs and Degrees (Majors & Minors) GE/Graduation Requirements Course descriptions http://catalog.csuci.edu/ UDGE, MP, double-counting link for MP/UDGE’s. Major Degree Planner, mention double counting UDGE and MP. Faculty Contact Information.

Transfer Model Curriculums (TMCs) If you are a TMC student, also known as “AA-T or AS-T” Some of the major requirements may vary Check the Catalog for TMC requirements If not reflected on CARR contact records and registration. BUS, ECS, MATH, BIOLBA (only), check CARR for verification.

Schedule of Classes Academic Calendar Add/drop deadlines (called “Change of Program Table” on website) Course Offerings http://www.csuci.edu/academics/catalog-and-schedule/ Include how to find GE – UDGE and online classes

University Transfer Courses UNIV 300 (1 unit course) UNIV 349 (3 unit course – variable topics) Meets UDGE-D Topics include: Transitioning to the University Campus Resources Study Strategies Creating an Academic Plan Career and Graduate School Planning

Registration Full-time = 12 units; Maximum = 18 units Add and drop courses the first 3 weeks of semester on myCI Starting January 21st, add by obtaining permission number from instructor Drop (no permission number needed) Weeks 4-12, only serious and compelling reasons for withdrawal It is your responsibility to verify your schedule Students on waitlists are automatically added -Might recommend taking a lighter load than they did at the CC in the first semester here.

Scheduling Suggestions Any remaining lower division major courses Upper division major courses UDGE courses (Upper Division GE B, C and D) Foreign language (one semester college level) American Institutions Multicultural Perspectives (MP) Course -Emphasize that this is NOT the community college and that it will not be as easy as it was then. -For social science majors suggest English 299 for help with writing. Page 4

Pre-requisites Enforced If prerequisite met, but blocked from enrollment, contact Records: records.registration@csuci.edu 805.437.8500 Took similar course, but not in ASSIST: Contact Program Chair Check w/ Instructor 1st day of class or week prior Tell students that if they have questions about major pre-reqs to ask faculty advisor in next session

Schedule Building Register online this afternoon Using your course interest list and the schedule of classes, begin building possible schedules Have alternate classes to choose from as classes fill
