Day 2: Parts of a Circuit Simple Circuits  An electric circuit is the path that an electric current follows  Current is flowing charges, like cars.
What Affects the Flow of Electricity? Some materials are good conductors. Electricity flows best through conductors. The base and the wires of a light.

ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS. Circuits Circuits are paths which small particles flow through to provide us with electricity for lights, appliances, and other devices.
Comes from Latin word that means, “to go around.” A circuit is a path provided to allow electrons to flow. A circuit allows the energy from a power.

Presentation transcript:

Electrical Circuits Objective: What is a simple circuit? How does electricity flow through a simple circuit to produce heat, light, and sound?

1. What is a closed circuit? An electrical circuit allows the movement of electrical energy.

Closed Circuit

1. What is an open circuit? This is an electrical circuit that prevents the movement of electrical energy. 4

Open circuit

2. Basic Parts of Circuit

Basic parts of a circuit: Load (Receiver) (light bulb) Wires Power Source (battery) Switch

LOAD (Receiver): The part of the circuit that changes electrical energy into another form of energy. Example: electrical energy is transformed by the load of the light bulb to light and thermal energy when the light is turned on.

Reality Check: What is a simple circuit? How does electricity flow through a simple circuit to produce heat, light, and sound?

3. Series Circuit

Series Circuit: A circuit that allows only one path for the flow of electricity.

Series Circuit: This type of circuit will not work if one or more light bulbs go out. 12

If bulb A burned out, no current could flow through the circuit. 13

Question: What would happen if bulb C burned out? 14

Refrigerator Example: If your refrigerator was wired by a series circuit and one light bulb burned out, the whole refrigerator would stop working.

4. Parallel Circuits

Parallel Circuit This is a circuit that allow electric current to flow along more than one path.

Parallel Circuit This type of circuit will work if one or more light bulbs go out.

If bulb A burned out there would still be current the could flow through the circuit.

Question: What would happen if bulb C burned out?

Quick Review:

Sample Question 1: Which circuit is a parallel circuit? B A

Sample Question 2:This is a parallel and series circuit mixed together Sample Question 2:This is a parallel and series circuit mixed together. What would happen if Bulb C burned out? Would the circuit still work? C A B D

Benefits Discuss with your groups benefits of parallel circuits? How about series circuits?

What Stuck With You Today? Remember my discussion about the way I travel to school? On your sticky note write your name tell me whether I take a series circuit way or do I take a parallel circuit way? Also tell me why (based on what you learned today) is it good to have an alternative way (different route) to school? On your way out stick your sticky note on the wall as your exit slip!
