1 Series Circuits Lesson 8

2 Series Circuits Some circuits provide a single pathway for electric current. A circuit that provides only one pathway for electric current is called a series circuit. In a series circuit, the loads and sources are connected in a single loop.

3 Look at the diagram to the right
Look at the diagram to the right. If you open the switch, how many bulbs will turn off? They will all turn off

4 What will happen if one bulb burns out?
Use the correct symbols to draw a diagram of a series circuit that has three batteries, two bulbs, and one switch What will happen if one bulb burns out? The circuit will be open and all of the lights will go out.

5 Remember that current only flows in a closed circuit
Remember that current only flows in a closed circuit. If you open a series circuit at any point, the flow of current stops everywhere in the circuit.

6 Lab: Adding loads in a series circuit
Many flashlights, toys and tools are designed with series circuits. What happens when you add loads to a series circuit?
