4 Circuit Diagram A way of drawing an electric circuit using standard symbols Components Electric cell (battery) Connecting wire Switch (open or closed) Light Motor Buzzer

5 Symbols

6 Series Circuit A circuit in which the loads are connected end to end so that there is only one path for electrons to flow.

7 Parallel Circuit A circuit in which the loads are connected by branches so that there are two or more paths for electrons to flow.

8 Electric Circuits Parallel circuits are the reason why your refrigerator still works if the fuse that regulates the stove blows. Question: What happens to your refrigerator if you blow the fuse that regulates the stove?

9 Example 1 Draw a circuit diagram showing an electric cell, a switch, and three lamps connected in series. 1. Determine the circuit diagram symbols for each device. 2. Draw the loads in series. 3. Add the switch and the electric cell. Remember to close the loop of the circuit.

10 Example 2 Draw a circuit diagram showing a two-cell battery with three lamps connected in parallel. Include one switch. Adjust your diagram so that three is a switch for controlling each lamp separately.
