A Few Quick Housekeeping Items: Welcome & Introductions Location of Bathrooms Please remain in the cafeteria or hallway leading between cafeteria and front doors; please do not walk around/explore building; children should remain with their parents at all times

3 Reasons Why the UPK Program is Anticipated VC Board of Education must decide to move forward with the UPK Program for 2019-2020 (May) UPK Grant Applications sent to NYS (June/July) Grant Approval Notification Received (August)

New York State UPK Allotment Valley Central School District should receive current 2018-2019 funding amounts for the 2019-2020 school year 35 students for half-day UPK services 112 students for full-day UPK services

Student Eligibility for UPK Age requirement: child must turn four (4) years old on or before December 1, 2019 Child must reside within the Valley Central School District Completion of an application form and submission of all required documents

Student Selection Process Half-Day Program Random lottery selection 2. Each eligible application will be drawn and if needed a waiting list will be created 3. Selection is performed by the Board of Education or its designee in April

Student Selection Process: Half-Day Program Half-Day Lottery All Eligible Half-Day Applicants First 35 Randomly Selected Placed at Half-Day Provider #36 - ??? Randomly Selected Placed on Half-Day Waiting List

Student Selection Process Full-Day Program Rubric/lottery selection process Priority will be given to high needs students based on information submitted with the UPK application packet. Full-Day Priority Selection Process (More Than 112 Full-Day Applicants) START Each eligible full-day applicant assigned 0-4 points based on need Separate all full-day applicants into five groups based on # of points assigned: 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0 Random lottery selection #1 for all students with 4 points Place each 4 point student on master list in order they were selected Random lottery selection #2 for all students with 3 points Place each 3 point student on master list, below 4 point students, in order they were selected Random lottery selection #3 for all students with 2 points Place each 2 point student on master list, below 3 point students, in order they were selected Random lottery selection #4 for all students with 1 point Place each 1 point student on master list, below 2 point students, in order they were selected Random lottery selection #5 for all students with 0 points Place each 0 point student on master list, below 1 point students, in order they were selected Place first 112 students on master list at full-day providers END Remaining students on master list placed on full-day waiting list

Email Notification of Lottery Selection ALL eligible applicants will receive an EMAIL indicating whether their child was selected and placed at one of the UPK Providers OR placed on the waiting list

Placement at UPK Provider Placement at a UPK Provider will occur following the selection process; placement is generally made according to 1st choice, 2nd choice, etc., unless the student has certain medical and/or physical needs that can only be met at a specific UPK Provider If your child has any medical and/or physical needs please be sure to speak with the UPK Nurse before you leave tonight

Placement at UPK Provider (cont’d.) If your child develops any medical and/or physical needs after placement at a UPK Provider, we retain the right to switch your child’s placement to the UPK Provider where those needs can best be met regardless of the time of year.

Registration is Required A full Valley Central School District registration is required in order to participate in the UPK Program. Registration will take place in mid May 2019 with the Registrar and the UPK Nurse at Central Office

Screening Required Health screening to take place in June 2019 with UPK Nurse at the Alternative Learning Center in Maybrook Required New Entrant screening to take place in June/July 2019; each UPK Provider will screen the students placed at their school New Entrant screening results may indicate further evaluation is recommended; further evaluation allows potential issues to be identified so that proper supports and services can be put into place in order to ensure your child’s success in school

Screening (cont’d.) Commissioner’s Regulations Part 117 establishes the current requirements for screening: Every new entrant to the schools must be screened to determine which students are possibly gifted, have or are suspected of having a possible disability and/or possibly are limited English proficient. 

Local UPK Providers (also called vendors, collaborating agencies and CBO’s – Community Based Organizations) Must meet all NYS UPK requirements and Commissioner of Education regulations to provide services

The 2019-2020 Providers are: LEARNING TOGETHER MISS CINDY’S NEIGHBORHOOD NURSERY SCHOOL MONTGOMERY NURSERY SCHOOL MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD SCHOOL MS. CLAIRE’S MONTESSORI SCHOOL SCHOOL TIME CHILDREN’S CENTER

UPK Provider Open House Schedule Please refer to the back of tonight’s agenda for dates, times and locations of each UPK Provider’s Open House (the Open House Schedule is also posted on the UPK web site) Hard copy on the back of your agenda.

UPK Parents & Guardians What is expected? Transport your child to and from the UPK Provider five days a week, bussing is not provided (Drop off and pick up your child at the appointed starting and ending times for your child’s class. If you regularly do not get your child to school on time or pick them up before class ends, it may jeopardize your child’s continued enrollment in UPK) Your child should be potty trained before September (see pg. 3 of FAQ document: 3 Day Potty Training.com) Full-day UPK: Send your child to school with lunch each day

Let’s Take a Look at the Application… There is no award for being the first to hand in your application – it does not improve your chances of being selected It is more important that you wait to hand in your application until you have ALL your required documents than to hand in an application that is incomplete

Use the CHECKLIST provided in the application packet to ensure all parts of the application are completely and accurately filled out AND that ALL required documents are submitted WITH your application

Documents You Must Submit with Your Application: Photocopy of your child's birth certificate (dob must be between 12/02/2014 - 12/01/2015) Up to date immunization record (signed/stamped) Residency documentation (see residency forms/documents page – then choose option that applies to you) Custody papers (if applicable)

Please Note: UPK staff are unable to answer questions or personally accept your application if you choose to drop it off If you have any questions about the application or required documents, please call or email the UPK Office BEFORE mailing or dropping off your application (also see the FAQ document, e.g. twins/triplets, before/after care, etc.) The UPK Office cannot make photocopies for you. You must provide your own copies.

Vendor Fair: Please visit each provider’s table tonight and attend the Open Houses in order to determine which UPK Provider you will list as your 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice, etc. on the Provider Selection Sheet
