History of the Cell Theory

Robert Hooke (1665) looked at cork cells w/ a simple compound microscope

Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1674) found living organisms in pond water

Matthias Schleiden (1838) claimed all plants are made of cells

Theodor Schwann (1839) claimed all animals are made of cells

Rudolf Virchow (1855) new cells can only be produced from previously existing cells "Omnis cellula e cellula"...

Cell Theory All living things are made of cells Cells are the basic unit of structure in living things New cells are produced from existing cells

Scientist Summary Scientist Importance Robert Hooke Cork Cells with a simple compound microscope Anton van Leeuwenhoek Living organisms in pond water Matthias Schleiden Plants are made of cells Theodor Schwann Animals are made of cells Rudolf Virchow New cells must come from old cells

Types of Organisms Unicellular – composed of a single cell   Multicellular – composed of many cells
