Lesson 3: Expressing Emotions in Healthful Ways Chapter 3 Lesson 3: Expressing Emotions in Healthful Ways

Understanding Your Emotions Emotions- signals that tell your mind and body how to react. What is an example of an emotion that can be challenging to express in a positive way? Many times, the most intense emotions you feel will be related to an event in your life. Changes during puberty are caused by hormones-chemicals produced by your glands that regulate the activities of different body cells. Emotions are more intense as you go through puberty.

Common Emotions Happiness Sadness Love Fear Guilt Anger Hostility-the intentional use of unfriendly or offensive behavior. Express an emotion without using words!

Dealing with Emotions in a Positive Way Emotions are neither good nor bad. HOWEVER The way you express your emotions can produce good or bad consequences. Empathy-the ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels. Emotions can be private for those who are uncomfortable expressing their feelings. What are some ways that people handle emotions negatively? What are some ways you handle your emotions?

Responding to difficult Emotions Some ways to reduce the intensity of your emotions: Take several deep breaths Relax your muscles Get away from the situation until you calm down Write in a journal Talk to someone you trust

Defense Mechanisms-are mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful emotions and situations. Repression Regression Denial Projection Suppression Rationalization Compensation

Responding to Difficult Emotions Defense mechanisms can help deal with emotions for a short time, but eventually you will need to work through the problem. Relying on these for too long can keep you from facing-and solving-what’s upsetting you.

Responding to Difficult Emotions Handling Fear Dealing With Guilt Overcome by recognizing that you are afraid Figure out what is causing the fear What are you afraid of? Example-going to college Requires the help of resources within your community Admitting a mistake, apologizing, and promising to be more thoughtful in the future can help manage feelings of guilt. You may not be able to control some situations. Example-parents divorce Realize it’s not your fault

Responding to Difficult Emotions Managing Anger Managing Anger Figure 0ut what is causing your anger and deal with it in a healthy way. Take time to calm down. Do something to relax. Example? Channel your energy in a different direction. Talk with someone you trust.
