The Health Continuum

Health Along the Continuum Health is dynamic. The health continuum spans the complete spectrum of health from chronic disease and premature death to a high level of health. Changes along the continuum may occur suddenly or gradually.

WHAT AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH? HEREDITY ENVIRONMENT ATTITUDE BEHAVIOR MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY

What are the three components of the health triangle?

PHYSICAL HEALTH Regular exercise Balanced diet Healthy weight Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and drugs Get plenty of rest (9-10 hours)

MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH Decision making skills Learn how to deal with life's problems Stress Management

SOCIAL HEALTH Get along with family and friends Give and get support when needed Reduce electronic dependency Average teen spends 6-8 hours on electrics per day.

BALANCE All 3 aspects of your health triangle need to be as balanced as possible. If one aspect is unhealthy it will dramatically affect your overall health.

PREVENTION

Efforts to stop the onset of a specific illness or condition, Efforts to detect a disease in an early stage.

MODERATION

Being within reasonable limits; Not excessive or extreme:

Many Eating and fitness habits are established by the age of 8 If you do not start smoking by the age of 18, you have an 80% chance of never becoming a smoker. If you drink in high school, you are 5X more likely to become an alcoholic. If you are not sexually active in high school you have an 80% chance of NOT becoming a teen parent. If you are not sexually active in high school you are less likely to contract an STD.
