Lewis and Clark began their trip to explore the Louisiana Purchase on May of 1804 near St. Louis, Missouri, where the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers meet. Color Missouri YELLOW and draw a RED STAR on their starting point. The Corps of Discovery traveled up the Missouri River. In August, in what is now Nebraska, they met with the Oto and Missouri Indians. Color Nebraska DARK GREEN. The Corps barely avoided a conflict with the Teton Sioux in South Dakota Color S. Dakota GRAY. Winter was spent in what is now North Dakota, building Fort Mandan. Color N. Dakota RED. Spring of 1805, the Corps continued with Sacagawea and her husband Charbonneau along the Missouri River to what is now Montana. Color Montana LIGHT GREEN. September 1805, after difficulties crossing the mountains, they made their way to what is now called Idaho, and could travel downstream. Color Idaho PINK. October 1805, they reached the Columbia River, in what is now Oregon. Color Oregon PURPLE. The expedition reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805. and built Fort Clatsop, where they stayed for the winter. Color the Pacific Coastline LIGHT BLUE and circle Fort Clatsop DARK BLUE. Lewis and Clark returned from their journey after 2 ½ years. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were both from Virginia. Color Virginia BROWN.
