4 Moving the keelboat loaded with up to 12 tones of supplies. Moving against the Missouri River current. Sailed, Paddled, Pulled, or Poled all day long.

5 A red and white Pirogue. Large canoe like boat.

6 Prickly Pear Cactus Could you imagine stepping on these while wearing moccasins.

7 Gateway to the West Lewis and Clark took off from St. Louis on May 14, 1804.

8 Goals of the Expedition # 1 – Find the Northwest Passage to the Orient. # 2 – Make Peace with the Native American tribes. # 3 – Map out the Missouri River and tributaries. # 4 – Find new plants and animals in Louisiana Territory.

9 Fort Mandan 1 st winter on the expedition. Met Sacajawea and hired her husband. She was used as a Guide, Translator, Peace Symbol.

10 Crossing the Lolo Pass  Around the 10 th of September 1805 the Corps of Discovery began walking through he Lolo Pass.  They were guided by a Shoshone guide that Sacajawea’s brother hired.  They were caught in a early surprise snowstorm.  The hunters could find very few animals to feed 33 men.  They were forced to eat candles, bear oil, horsemeat, and packaged "portable" soup they'd brought from the east.

14 The Trip Home  March 23 rd 1806 – Lewis and Clark set out and head back to St. Louis.  They travel faster coming back because they already explored and they do not have to fight the Missouri River current.  Lewis And Clark reach St. Louis on September 23, 1806. September 23, 1806.
