Naming Covalent Compounds Name first element. The subscript becomes the prefix Mono=1 Di=2 Tri=3 Tetra=4 Penta=5 Hexa=6 Hepta=7 Octa =8 Nano=9 Deca=10 Do Not write mono on the first element Name second element with –ide ending The subscript becomes the prefix even if it is mono When two a’s, o’s or o and a are together, drop the first for pronunciation purposes
