H.A.K.U.N.A.M.A.T.A.T.A. Mission Overview High Altitude Kameras United for Near-infrared Atmospheric IMaging of stars Also with Temperature Assessment that is Totally Awesome Mission Statement: Team T.W.S.S. will design and construct a BalloonSat that will simultaneously image the stars in both the visible and near-infrared spectrum in order to empirically measure at which altitude stars become visible within each unique spectrum

Design Overview Camera’s mounted side by side in box within specially designed cradle/holster Shape of irregular Triangular Prism makes optimum use of space while keeping vital components close to the heater – also keeps camera’s mounted at 45 degree angle

Test Results Drop and Stair Tests: Whip and Swing Tests: Successfully accomplished Dropped from height of 20 feet Rolled down long set of stairs Repeated each three times Sustained negligible damage, revealing the overall structural integrity of the design Whip and Swing Tests: Performed three times Cameras and other subsystems stayed in mounting positions Revealed that original mounting positions were most optimal

Cold Test: HOBO Data Cold Test began at roughly 11:00 and ended roughly four hours later at 15:25 Internal temperature dropped below zero roughly 2.3 hours into the Cold Test Cold Test ended

Batteries expanded during Cold Test, causing them to rupture.

Cold Test Science Results: Visible Light Camera: Took over 500 pictures Ran for whole duration of test Infrared Camera: Took 2 pictures due to an unfortunate/unlucky wiring malfunction that has since been corrected for Experienced non temperature malfunction early in test Summary: While the temperature eventually dipped below zero degrees the camera was able to keep functioning

Pictures taken w/o near infrared filter Pictures taken with near infrared filter

Prediction of Results Once stars start to become visible, the rate at which stars become distinguishable will rapidly increase in an exponential manner Expected relationship of the number of star’s visible with respect to altitude

Biggest Worries 9-Volt batteries will rupture as they did during cold test Camera’s will not synchronize correctly and will end up taking pictures of different sections of the sky Victor’s hair will get caught in balloon’s rope and carry him away into space.
