The Roles of the President Governmental Systems in the United States - Executive Branch and The President

President & his ROLES! President’s Job -As the nation has grown so has the job of being President -Examples: Just like the many roles we play, as does the President. For example: You all may be students – athletes – club members – brothers – sisters – mentors – etc….

Role 1 – Chief Executive Appointing someone to serve as head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Chief Executive -Head of the Executive Branch -Duties: -Carry Out the Laws -Issue Executive Orders--Term for orders given by the President in order to carry out his duties as Chief Executive— the orders have the same force as law -Appoint Government Officials: such as judges/ Head of the Cia – FBI - Etc

-Make Treaties w/ Senate Approval Traveling to England to meet with Parliament and other British leaders.   Entertaining Japanese diplomats in the White House. What is a mediator?   -Duties -Make Treaties w/ Senate Approval -Act as Mediator between Nations -Deals with Foreign Governments Role 2 - Chief Diplomat

Role 3 Commander in Chief -Leader of the Armed Forces -Duties -Command Our Troops -Picks Military Leaders Inspecting a Navy yard.   Deciding, in wartime, whether to bomb foreign cities.   Calling out troops to stop a riot.

Role 4 - Legislative Leader -Uses Presidential Influence Duties: -State of the Union Speech-- Speech given by the President each year to describes the situation of the nation and the speech is required by the Constitution - Uses the media to help reach out to Americans  Signing a bill of Congress. Making a speech in Congress (joint-session)

Role 5 Party Leader -Is the Visible leader of his political party and Pursues policies favorable to his party goals Duties: -uses patronage system the patronage system gives out gov’t positions to those people who gave support - pages/interns -gives endorsements in campaigns-- Process where famous or influential people give their support to someone who is seeking office

Role 6 Judicial Leader -Head of the Law Enforcement System -Power to appoint Federal and Supreme Court Judges with approval of the Senate -Has certain Judicial powers - Duties: immunity– making someone free from prosecution pardon--forgiving someone for a crime reprieve-- delaying the punishment given to someone commutation– reducing a person’s sentence amnesty– legal term for granting pardons to a group – example are illegal immigrants

Role 7 - Chief of State Awarding medals to the winners of college scholarships. Congratulating astronauts on their journey into space. Making a patriotic speech on the Fourth of July. -Is the symbolic leader of the nation - Duties Meets foreign leaders -Make patriotic speeches and visits -mostly symbolic gestures

Create a “roles of the president’ chart!!! Divide 1 piece of paper into fourths – fold it hamburger and then hotdog Make the first square your “title square” and number the rest 1-7 List 7 roles of the president – one in each section List the duties/responsibilities under each role Create 2 symbols for each role Be creative!
