Also has power to:
Veto bills
Call Congress into special session
Commander in chief to armed forces
Receive leaders and officials from other countries
Make treaties with Senate approval
Appoint heads of executive agencies with senate approval
Pardon people convicted of crimes
State of the Union address

4. Chief Executive As chief executive, the president must carry out laws
In charge of 15 cabinet departments and roughly 3 million civilians who work for the federal government

5. Chief Executive Constitution gives the president power of appointment
This gives the President power to appoint judges to Supreme court and other federal courts
The president has power to grant pardons, reprieves and amnesty

6. Chief Diplomat Directs the foreign policy of the United States
Foreign policy is how the US acts towards other countries

7. Commander in Chief
Commander in Chief of the armed forces which include the army, navy, air force, marines and coast guard
Ability to back up foreign policy with force
Congress can declare war, but President orders American soldiers into battle
War Powers Resolution of 1973
President has to notify Congress within 48 hours when troops sent into battle
troops must be pulled back after 60 days unless Congress declares war

8. Legislative leader Every president wants new laws to be passed
Makes speeches and meets with reps and senators to persuade them to support proposed laws
Often president and congress conflict

9. Head of State
Diplomatic leader- visits foreign leaders of other countries
Ceremonial functions

10. Economic leader Deals with all the economic problems the country faces
Decides on federal government budget

Leader of his or her political party
