3. State of the Union Address
Speech to Congress where the President discusses most important issues facing the country.

Pres. is head of the Executive Branch, which must enforce laws
Can issue Executive Orders – have the force of law
Appoints Executive officials
Pardons, reprieves, amnesty

5. Chief Diplomat
Pres. must direct foreign policy (how we interact with foreign countries)
Makes treaties, signs executive agreements, appoints ambassadors, encourages foreign aid (military), encourages international trade, and uses military force

President must notify Congress within 48 hours when troops are sent into battle

Pres. proposes legislation to be considered by Congress – tries to persuade Congress to agree with him and pass laws

9. Head-Of-State The Pres. is a living symbol of the United States
Greets visiting foreign leaders
Ceremonial role as the country’s leader

10. Economic Leader
Pres. Should direct and control national economy - proposes National budget to Congress each year
