Essential Questions:What are the Constitutional duties of the President of the United States? How is the authority to make and enforce laws determined?

2 Constitutional Duties of the President
Article Two listed duties of the Pres.: Enforce laws Veto power Call Congress into special session Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces Greet leaders of foreign countries Make treaties Appoint federal officials (heads of agencies, judges, ambassadors, etc.) Pardon or commute penalties for crimes Give Congress information on the “State of the Union”

4 Chief Executive Pres. is head of the Executive Branch, which must enforce laws Can issue Executive Orders – have the force of law Appoints Executive officials Pardons, reprieves, amnesty

5 Chief Diplomat Pres. must direct foreign policy (how we interact with foreign countries) Makes treaties, signs executive agreements, appoints ambassadors, encourages foreign aid (military), encourages international trade, and uses military force

6 Commander-In-Chief Leader of the military – can send troops into battle; however, he still relies on Congress for Declaration of War Guardian of National Security – uses the National Security Council to investigate and promote national safety (CIA)

7 Commander in Chief War Powers Act
President must notify Congress within 48 hours when troops are sent into battle These troops must be brought home within 60 days unless Congress gives permission

8 Chief Legislator Pres. proposes legislation to be considered by Congress – tries to persuade Congress to agree with him and pass laws

9 Head-Of-State The Pres. is a living symbol of the United States
Greets visiting foreign leaders Ceremonial role as the country’s leader

10 Economic Leader Pres. Should direct and control national economy - proposes National budget to Congress each year

11 Party Leader Head of the political party
Should support others in the party and participate in fundraising activities
