Background First Task Force (set up by the Directors of Social Statistics) met in May/June 2005 produced a set of variables for collection of statistical data Since then, information collected and published on an annual basis for all EU Member States, Candidate, Potential candidate and EFTA/EEA countries in the “Statistics in focus” series on the Eurostat website Collection of this data was one of the main elements in 2006-2010 Action Plan (drawn up by the Commission to implement the 2005 Hague Programme) Also included in successor to that Action Plan for the period 2011-2015. 9 – 10 June 2011

Data collection – reference year 2008 Request was made in September 2009 Summary tables published in “Statistics in Focus” in November 2010 All the data and metadata available on the Eurostat website 9 – 10 June 2011

Data collection – reference year 2009 Request was made in December 2010 Nearly all countries have provided data Still some problems to resolve will speak to contact persons Summary tables to be published in “Statistics in focus” Working group invited to propose and discuss ideas for the content 9 – 10 June 2011

Data collection – future Reference year 2010 request to be launched later this year same variables as before, possibly with more detail (as outlined in the Action Plan) offences by gender and age group prisoners by nationality and residence Reference year 2011 Eurostat and UNODC exploring feasibility of setting up single data collection system 9 – 10 June 2011

Statistics in focus – reference year 2009 Need input from Working Group the focus and content of the publication do the new figures suggest a clear message? the presentation of the data suggestions for suitable charts or graphs To aid discussion, some ideas are presented in the Annex to the Paper 9 – 10 June 2011
