Design Contest MAE 3

Why a Design Contest Apply Engineering Tools Manage the Design Process Emphasize/Struggle/Rejoice Creativity Using Resources Team work Project Management

Open Ended Design Contest Each quarter there is a new contest There are many viable design solutions Instructors and TAs do not know the best design But we will help you develop your design concepts

Design Challenges Understanding the problem Creativity Using Resources (check the web page!) Team work Risk Reduction Project Management Review Challenges of the Design Process handout, since material will be required for final report.

Teams Teams will be created by instructors Real World environment Work with diverse group including students from other majors Peer review will be conducted midway through the project and at the end of project, which will effect course grade Teamwork lecture will cover this in more depth

Introducing the Spring Year Anniversary MAE3 Design Contest

Sun God Robot Contest The first MAE3 robot contest related to UCSDs Sun God, and we repeat the tradition 10 years later

Playing Field Each robot starts in a starting area on opposing sides of the stadium Rings are held in holders on both sides of the table. A center ring will roll to whichever side has a ring removed first The robot starting size is limited to a 10 inch cube

Top View of Playing Field

Contest Scoring 1 points for every ring removed from the holder 5 points for every ring that is placed on the Sun Gods wing 10 points for every ring that is placed on the Sun Gods crown Tie breaker rings are worth double in all categories, and also break ties.

Some Rules Scoring for fan placement will take place after the 1 minute contest, and all parts have stopped moving. All referee rulings are final.

Contest Overview Each team will build a robot using parts from a kit including DC motors, a solenoid, timing belts, Aluminum and Acrylic parts, and … The maximum starting robot size is define by starting box The robot will be completely controlled by electrical switches

Some More Rules The robot may not damage the playing field Robots may interact with each other, but cannot intentionally damage another machine Any safety hazards will be disqualified.

Contest Webpage Review webpage description carefully Review kit materials carefully

Design Schedule Week 3: Review contest table and kit Week 4: Team formation and review design concepts Week 6: Demonstrate Risk Reduction Week 8:Get five points Week 10: In-Section Presentation and Contest Finals: Class wide contest If you cannot make finals time your team can run your robot, and you can show instructor improvements at other time in finals week.

Team Formation Teams will be assigned randomly (you dont get to choose your team members in industry) If there is someone in your section that you do not want to work with, then send your tutor an a week before teams are formed.
