Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 1Spring Quarter 2005 Engineering H193 Project Notebook & Brainstorming Sketches Week 1 Day 2

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 2Spring Quarter 2005 Overview Due Today –Signed teamwork agreements –Coupons for course materials –Readings: Chap 1, Sec 1.1, 1.2; Chap 3 from Martin Today’s Topics –Project Notebooks –Brainstorming, Sketches, & Strategy Electronic Journal Topics –How have you matured in the last two quarters? –What evidence of this change exists? –What needs improvement?

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 3Spring Quarter 2005 Documentation Topic: The Notebook With final report, allows someone to repeat your work -- or avoid your mistakes Serves as legal document for court cases if necessary Serves as a reminder of what was done and how it was done Bring new team member up to speed Helps you prepare needed reports (both written & oral)

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 4Spring Quarter 2005 Notebook Contents (Everything) BRAINSTORMING IDEAS DESIGN SKETCHES CALCULATIONS DATA COLLECTED GRAPHS OF DATA PHOTOGRAPHS CAD MODELS & DRAWINGS TESTING LOG INCLUDING TEST DESCRIPTIONS PROJECT SCHEDULE BUDGET AND COSTS TEAM MEETING AGENDAS TEAM MEETING NOTES DECISIONS MADE REASONS FOR DECISIONS SOURCES OF INFO NAME (OR INITIALS) AND DATE ON EVERY ENTRY

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 5Spring Quarter 2005 Documentation Areas (Sets) Management Set –Project Schedule, Status Assessment Reports, Configuration Management, etc. Requirements Set –Design Problem Statement and Specification, etc. Design Set –Brainstorming Ideas, Architecture, Design Sketches, Calculations, Data Charts & Graphs, Photographs, etc. Implementation Set –Source code, manufacturing drawings, etc. Deployment Set –Release documentation, final report, etc.

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 6Spring Quarter 2005 Documentation Naming A key process area for maintaining organizational consistency and repeatability Important for ISO certification

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 7Spring Quarter 2005 Notebook Requirements In a 3-ring binder for this class Table of contents and tabs for major sections (put those in NOW and add/modify as needed – keep it organized from the beginning) Should truly allow someone to repeat your project Must be neat--sketches and drawings on engineering problem paper or grid paper Turned in on last day of class

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 9Spring Quarter 2005 The Writing Component At the end of the quarter your team will have to submit a final engineering report. Drafts will be written along the way. Read Chapter 6 in Writing as an Engineer (WE) to make sure that your project notebook has sections for all of the things that you will need to refer to as you write your final report.

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 10Spring Quarter 2005 Brainstorming Ideas and Strategy Documentation

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 11Spring Quarter 2005 Sketches Of Strategy & Brainstorming Ideas Write or sketch strategy - how your team will attack the problem (multiple scenarios should be considered and ranked because strategy will change with time) Each potential concept should be briefly sketched to capture the idea Sketches to be done on engineering problem paper & put in notebook Initial sketches will likely focus only on a particular feature or idea -- not necessarily a complete robot

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 12Spring Quarter 2005 Sketch Layout – Engineering Problem Paper Top FrontSide Pictorial Scale Who When Overall Dimensions Notes All on one page Options: 3 Views Pictorial ENG H191 grid paper Or Engr Prob Paper

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 13Spring Quarter 2005 Sketches Of Strategy & Brainstorming Ideas For Monday - Week Two –Turn in categorized, typed list of ideas –Turn in sketches of good concepts for features –Turn in a written and/or sketched strategy And alternate strategies –Turn in sketches of three overall concepts Three different chasses Three different drivetrains Three different pick-up and deposit ideas –Put a cover sheet on the assignment –Add the grade sheet(s) to the end of the assignment(s)

Engineering H193 - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 16Spring Quarter 2005 The Next Activity Collect Coupons from Teams in exchange for the Starter Kits (see list of Starter Kit components on the next page) View a video about the starter kit and about caring for the HandyBoard. Remember teams are responsible for the care and housing for their robots, notebooks, HandyBoard, etc. Also Remember !! – Your team is officially designated with a letter and number – A-5, B-7, etc. All items will be assigned by team designation. All submittals must carry the team designation. There will be specifications later for your robot ‘flag’ or label that will carry the team designation for the competition.
