The Phrase

Definition Phrase - a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does NOT contain both a verb and its subject.

Types of Phrases There are numerous types of phrases. Type is determined by how the group of words is used in the sentence. There are three major types of phrases: Prepositional Phrase Verbal Phrase Appositive Phrase

Prepositional Phrase Prepositional Phrase includes a preposition, the object of the preposition, and any modifiers of that object. Did officials of the Smithsonian Institution recently unveil plans for a new museum?

Types of Prepositional Phrases Adjective Phrase - a prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun (tells what kind or which one) One of my friends is making a film about school. Adverb Phrase - a prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb. (tells how, when, where, why, to what extent) The Fujiwara had ruled too complacently for their own good.
