Psychology I Notes Chapter 10, 11, & 12 If you study this, You shall pass…

Childhood & Infancy Dizygotic twins originate from two separate eggs. Separation anxiety is most likely to occur when a ten-month-old infant feels his or her parents are not coming back when they leave.

Childhood & Infancy Psychologists believe that language develops mainly because humans have the physical capacity to speak, are reinforced when making certain sounds, and are programmed from birth to speak.

Childhood & Infancy Maturation is the process of physical and mental development. The critical period for learning a foreign language is before age 12. Parents who use the authoritative parenting style tend to raise children who have a positive image of themselves.

Development in Nature In a zoo in California, a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size, they died shortly after birth. The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve. After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species will take on the care of a different species. The only orphans" that could be found quickly, were a litter of weaner pigs. The zoo keepers and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops?????????????

Adolescence The most important psychological issue facing adolescents is achieving a sense of identity.

Adolescence Boys experience growth spurts about two years later than girls. Differences between boys and girls in the level of physical maturation is greatest during early adolescence. Bulimia nervosa is physical and psychological problem. It also tends affects more females than males.

Adolescence The need to conform to the group in physical appearance and activities is strongest during early adolescence. One characteristic of crowds is they have strict rules concerning how their members dress. Bickering and arguing between parents and adolescents is at its worst during early adolescence.

Adulthood Most single-parent families today are made up of a mother raising the children alone. Currently the divorce rate in the United States today is about 50%.

Midlife Crisis The sense of urgency, tired of routine, and not having the feeling of accomplishing enough is most likely to happen to both men and women from ages 35 to 45. During the time of midlife, the sexes tend to reverse roles in the family.

Late Adulthood When a woman experiences menopause androgen becomes more dominant. As one ages, personality generally stays the same as when the person was younger. The most likely cause of memory loss in older people the loss of chemicals used for cell communication.

Late Adulthood Alzheimer’s results from a loss of brain chemicals. The empty nest period is the time when the children are gone from the home. Retirement is the time when work is stopped.

Death A hospice is the place where you are placed to live out your life if you are terminally ill. A dying person is experiencing the bargaining stage when he or she asks for extra time to live. (Denial, Anger, Depression, Acceptance)
