1 Human Growth and Development

2 The Life Cycle

3 Six Main Stages of Life Infancy Maturity Childhood Adolescence
Young Adulthood Middle Adulthood Maturity

4 Infancy This Stage lasts from birth to one year.
Infants need loving care and attention

5 Childhood This Stage lasts from 1 through 12.
Children are busy taking in all sorts of new information. Encouragement and support from others builds positive self-esteem

6 Adolescence Begins at age 12 and ends around age 18
This is a time of transition from child to adult. Decision making, goal setting, and good communication skills help prepare adolescents for adulthood

7 Young Adulthood Early adulthood lasts from age 18 until around age 40.
Many are busy pursuing an education, training for a career, getting married and starting a family during this time. Working to achieve career and family goals often extends into middle adulthood

8 Middle Adulthood This stage begins in the 40’s and continues until age 65. People in this stage begin to get involved in their communities as well as prepare for retirement.

9 Maturity This stage begins around age 65 when adults are beginning to think of retirement. Maintaining good health will help you stay active during late adulthood.

11 Timeline of your Life!!! Create a timeline of your life using pictures or words describing big events that have happened from the time you were born until today!

12 What stage of life are you approaching?

13 Did you say…….Adolescence!
Yes….You’re Growing Up This is the transition period between a child and an adult!

14 Some teens may look younger or older than they really are.
These difference are caused by the changes teens go though during ADOLESCENCE. All teens experience these changes, but they occur at different times and speeds for everyone.

15 Adolescence brings changes in all three areas of your health triangle.
Many of these changes are caused by hormones. (chemicals made by the body) Hormones are produced in the endocrine system. This is a body system containing glands that regulate growth and other important activities

16 Growth and Development
You can grow and develope in three different ways. Mentally/emotionally- Mind and feelings Socially- Interactions and relationships with others Physically- Body Remember This

17 Mental/Emotional Changes
Mental: These changes may be more difficult to see. Younger children need to see and touch things to be convinced that they are real. But in early adolescence, children become able to think about ideas and about things that they can't see or touch. They are able to think through problems and see the consequences. For the first time, they can think about what might be, instead of what is. Example: A 6-year-old thinks a smiling person is happy and a crying person is sad. A 14-year-old may tell you that a sad person smiles to hide his true feelings.

18 Mental/Emotional Changes
You may feel strong emotions that you do not always understand. You might be happy one moment and sad the next (Mood swings-sudden shifts in emotion.) Young children are not able to think far ahead, but young teens can and do—which allows them to worry about the future.

19 Come up with a list of things that you have or may worry about in the near future!
school performance appearance, physical development and popularity; being bullied at school; school violence; not having friends; drugs and drinking; the divorce of their parents

20 Mental/Emotional Changes
You will learn to appreciate different Opinions or points of view You will begin to identify your own values and beliefs You will also become aware of your opinions, decisions, and actions affect others You may experience mood swings which are sudden shifts of emotions.

21 Social Changes Adolescence brings about changes in the way you relate to others You become more independent. Your parents/guardians may give you more responsibility Your friends may become very important. Their opinions and actions may influence you without you even knowing it. * Choose friends that support you and influence you in a positive way. This will help you make good choices during your teen years.

22 Physical Changes Puberty: This is the time when you start developing the physical characteristics of adults of your gender. Body hair Increased sweating or perspiration Body shape and height Increased hormones Acne Puberty begins at different times for different people Typically, it starts between the ages of 8 and 14

23 Over the past summer, Phil noticed his voice beginning to change
Over the past summer, Phil noticed his voice beginning to change. Acne is appearing on Marie’s face. Changes such as these signal the arrival of puberty.

24 Puberty is the time when you start developing the physical characteristics of adults of your gender. Other changes that occur during puberty include the growth of body hair and increased sweating, or perspiration. The shape of your body changes, and you grow taller.

25 During puberty, some body parts may grow faster than other parts
During puberty, some body parts may grow faster than other parts. This is especially true of the hands and feet. These changes may make some teens feel awkward or self-conscious. Others, for whom puberty comes later, can feel “left behind.” Although these situations can be troubling, remember that they are only temporary.

26 Using the picture on the next slide fill in the Universal Access Activity 1 worksheet that you picked up today. The picture represents physical changes that occur during puberty to males and females. Notice that boys and girls go through some similar changes.

27

28 Changes in Males and Females
Changes in Females Increased male hormones(testosterone) Deeper Voice Broadened shoulders Facial Hair Muscle Development Growth of hair Increased sweating Grow taller Feel awkward Appreciate different opinions Acne Increased levels of female hormones Development of breasts Increased body fat Wider hips Beginning of menstrual cycles
