Hobby Middle School 11843 Vance Jackson San Antonio, TX 78230 210-397-6300 Thank you for your attention! Our purpose is to help you get an idea of whether AVID might be a good fit for you. But it is still up to you to apply and interview for the AVID elective. You must have good behavior, good attendance, and a good attitude to be chosen for AVID. We’re looking for students who are willing to work hard, study, and do their homework every night. 1

What is the Mission of AVID? AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

AVID is... An ELECTIVE class in Middle School through High school 6th grade AVID replaces Advisory A family away from home that supports thinking outside of the box and encourages you become a life-long learner A more RIGOROUS schedule for students For students who want to do better in school, but need a little help For students who are already doing well and want to build their academic skills to get ready for high school and college

We’re interested in students who... Who should take AVID? We’re interested in students who... Either: need an academic push are in the middle and currently earns Bs and Cs, maybe a couple Ds need help developing study skills and work habits Or: are 3.0+ students who have the potential to earn 3.6+ may be taking advanced core classes or high school credit classes and need support will be taking PreAP classes

Who Gets to be in AVID? Students with Academic Potential: Average to High Test Scores (Approaches or Above) 2.0–3.5 GPA (B or C student; 3.5 + gpa not a limiting factor) College Potential with Support Desire, Determination, and Self Motivation Good Citizenship, Self Discipline Good Attendance Record Strong Work Habits A Collaborator 6

In AVID we... take notes in each core class and learn how to use them to study have organized binders and updated planners with us have tutorials twice a week so we can learn from and teach our peers have college and career related field trips do team building activities to practice working and solving problems together work on WICOR skills

What skills will we develop in AVID? Writing Inquiry Collaboration Organization Reading 10

AVID Tutorials Add photos of tutorials and tutors at your campus Tutorials are held twice a week. Students are divided into small groups and work with a college tutor to gain a deeper understanding of curriculum concepts. Tutorials are not just homework help but instead a collaborative peer group whose goal is to clarify content questions and push each other into a higher level of understanding. 11

AVID Is For You! Must have the desire to take Pre AP classes in Middle School and AP classes in High School. Must be college bound! Need that academic push to succeed! 8th graders want to earn High School credit for the AVID Elective AVID applications must be returned to your counselor November 30, 2018 14
