Mixed Expressions Chapter 6 Section 6.3

Objective Students will write mixed expressions as fractions in simplest form

Concept A mixed number like 2¾ represents the sum of an integer and a fraction. You can write a mixed number as a single fraction in simplest form

Write 2¾ as a fraction in simplest form Example Write 2¾ as a fraction in simplest form

Concept The sum or difference of a polynomial and a fraction is called a mixed expression. To write a mixed expression as a fraction in simplest form, put the integer over 1, find the common denominator, fix top to match new denominator, add or subtract numerator, put over common denominator.

Write as a fraction in simplest form c + 5 c Example Write as a fraction in simplest form c + 5 c

Write as a fraction in simplest form 5 - x – 3 x + 2 Example Write as a fraction in simplest form 5 - x – 3 x + 2

Write as a fraction in simplest form x + 5x + 2 - 7 x – 1 x – 1 Example Write as a fraction in simplest form x + 5x + 2 - 7 x – 1 x – 1
