1 ADDING & SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS
BY: D. Kritikos

2 Adding & Subtracting with Like Denominators
To add or subtract numbers with like denominators, add or subtract the numerators. Write the sum or difference over the common denominator For all integers a, b, and c, where c≠0,

3 EXAMPLE 1 Subtract. Reduce to lowest terms. Solution
Subtract the numerators. Write the difference over the common denominator. Solution Reduce to lowest terms.

4 PRACTICE: Add or subtract. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2 #3

5 EXAMPLE 2 Subtract. Reduce to lowest terms. Solution
Subtracting -7/25 is the same as adding 7/25. Reduce to lowest terms.

6 PRACTICE: Subtract. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2

7 EXERCISES #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #8

8 Adding & Subtracting with Unlike Denominators
To add or subtract numbers with unlike denominators, first change them to equivalent fractions with like denominators (LCD) Add or subtract the numerators, and write the sum or difference over the common denominator.

9 EXAMPLE 3 Add. Reduce to lowest terms. Solution
Change each to a fraction with a denominator of 24. Solution

10 PRACTICE: Add. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2 #3

11 EXAMPLE 4 Subtract. Reduce to lowest terms. Solution
6 is the least common multiple (LCM) of 6 and 2. Solution Reduce to lowest terms.

12 PRACTICE: Subtract. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2

13 EXERCISES #5 #1 #2 #3 #4

14 Adding & Subtracting with Mixed Numbers
The rules for adding and subtracting numbers with like and unlike denominators apply to mixed numbers. It sometimes helps to change mixed numbers to improper fractions before adding or subtracting.

15 EXAMPLE 5 Subtract. Solution
Find equivalent fractions with like denominators and rename 4 3/6 as 3 9/6. Subtract the fractions, and then subtract the whole numbers.

16 PRACTICE: Add or subtract. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2

17 EXAMPLE 6 Add and reduce to lowest terms. Solution
Write each mixed number as an improper fraction. 6 is the least common denominator (LCD).

18 PRACTICE: Add or subtract. Reduce to lowest terms.
#1 #2

19 Let’s see some fraction action!
By completing the worksheet Today will be the addition worksheet Tomorrow will be the subtraction worksheet
