André Jol Group Leader Air and Climate Change Workshop on Inventories and Projections of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Waste (EU Climate Change Committee) 2-3 May, 2005 European Environment Agency André Jol Group Leader Air and Climate Change

Improvement activities EU Climate Change Committee Part of a series of workshops under the EU Monitoring Mechanism for greenhouse gas emissions and implementation of the Kyoto Protocol Key sources of GHG emissions addressed so far: Feb. 2002: Energy (Brussels) Feb. 2003: Agriculture (Copenhagen) May 2004: Aviation and shipping Sep 2004: National inventory systems QA/QC of inventories 2003/2004: several workshops on LULUCF, agriculture (JRC) and on inverse modelling (JRC) Waste (CRFcat. 6) is a key source sector: 2% of EU total emissions (mainly methane), decrease 31% from 1990-2003 and 2.5% 2002-2003). Largest share (73%) is from landfills.

Main objectives of this workshop To help improve the national and EU GHG inventories in the waste sector to accurately monitor the EU progress towards the Kyoto targets To share national information and experiences (data, methodologies) To compare data and methods for the top-down (UNFCCC, EU GHG MM) GHG inventories with plant level information under EPER (IPPC) and improve the consistency To share information on the developments and implementation of the Landfill Directive and the effects on GHG inventories and projections To agree on recommendations for improvements

Expected output Recommendations to Members States, European Commission and UNFCCC/IPCC (where relevant) on how to improve transparency, accuracy, consistency, comparability and completeness of greenhouse gas inventories and projections from the waste sector
