VOCATIONAL SERVICE

DECLARATION OF ROTARIANS IN BUSINESSES AND PROFESSIONS As a Rotarian engaged in a business or profession, I am expected to: 1) CONSIDER my vocation to be another opportunity to serve; 2) BE FAITHFUL to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country, and to the moral standards of my community; 3) DO ALL in my power to dignify my vocation and to promote the highest ethical standards in my chosen vocation; 4) BE FAIR to my employer, employees, associates, competitors, customers, the public, and all those with whom I have a business or professional relationship; 5) RECOGNIZE the honor and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society; 6) OFFER my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community; 7) ADHERE to honesty in my advertising and in all representations to the public concerning my business or profession; 8) NEITHER seek from nor grant to a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.

TENTATIOS QUATTUOR Rerum dicemus, cogitamus aut facimus: 1. VERITASNE? 2. Omnibus JUSTUSNE? 3. AFFECTUM et AMICITIAS melior construetne? 4. Omnibus PROERITNE?

Vocational Service focuses on: Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors, and the public. The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians. The contribution of your vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of the community.

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave. What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when your gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
