4 Profession The term profession refers to an occupation, vocation or high-status career, usually involving prolonged academic training, formal qualifications and membership of a professional or regulatory body.

5 PROFESSION CONT., The term profession derives from the Latin: "to swear (an oath)". The oath referred to adherence to ethical standards, which include practitioner / client confidentiality, truthfulness, and to be an expert in one's calling, all three of these being practiced above all for the benefit of the client. 6 Characteristics of a Profession... Specialized education –standardized in a collegial setting Body of knowledge on which performance is based –intellectual characteristics –nursing theory development Ability to deliver a unique service to others Ethics –value of worth and dignity of others –Social policy statement and Code for Nurses

7 The Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice 1- practice their profession with integrity, honesty, truthfulness and adherence to the absolute obligation to safeguard the public trust. 2- act according to the highest standards and visions of their organization, profession and conscience

8 The Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice 3- improve their professional knowledge and skills, so that their performance will better serve others. 4- demonstrate concern for the interests and well being of individuals affected by their actions. 5- value the privacy, freedom of choice and interests of all those affected by their actions

9 6- advocate within their organizations, adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.

10 ANA ethics for nurses The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community.

11 ANA ethics for nurses The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient. The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and to provide optimum patient care

12 ANA ethics for nurses The nurse owes the same duties to self as to others The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development.
