The Importance of Good Health Health is the combination of physical, mental/ emotional, and social well-being. B. Health is dynamic, or subject to constant change. Your health at any moment is a point on the health continuum, which ranges from high level of health to premature death.

Promoting Your Health The decisions you make each day affect your health. B. These are some of the habits, or lifestyle factors, that promote good health: 1. Get eight to ten hours of sleep each night 2. Start each day with a healthy breakfast 3. Eat a variety of nutritious foods each day 4. Be physically active for at least 20 minutes, three or more days a week 5. Maintain a healthy weight 6. Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs 7. Abstain from sexual activity before marriage 8. Manage stress 9. Maintain positive relationships 10. Practice safe behaviors to prevent injuries

Promoting Your Health C. A key to your wellness is prevention, practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. D. Health education, the providing of health information to help people make healthy choices, is important because it gives people the tools to become and stay healthy.

Promoting Your Health E. Healthy People 2010 is a nationwide health promotion and disease-prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. It focuses on healthy individuals, families, and communities.

Promoting Your Health F. Health literacy refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and to use these resources to promote his or her health and wellness. 1. A health-literate individual is a critical thinker and problem solver. 2. A health-literate individual is a responsible, productive citizen. 3. A health-literate individual is a self- directed learner 4. A health-literate individual is an effective communicator
