Intro to Geography

What is Geography? Geography is the study of everything on Earth. How natural environments influence people How people affect the Earth How the World is changing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwbToV-FvsU

2 Branches of Geography 1.) Human Geography 2.) Physical Geography

Human Geography The study and distribution of the World’s people. Examines how people make and trade things that they need to survive.

Physical Geography Focuses on Earth’s natural environments Landforms Water features Plants & Animals Other physical features Studies the processes that shape the physical environment

What is a Region? Region- is an area with one or more common features that make it different from surrounding areas. Cities, States, Countries, & Continents Defined by physical and human features

Types of Regions Formal Region- has one or more common features that make it different from its surrounding areas (mountains, Rust Belt) Functional Region- made up of different places that are linked together and function as a unit (shopping malls, cities, city transit systems) Perceptual Region- region that reflects human feelings and attitude (home, the south)

Maps Globe- is a scale model of the Earth Lines that circle the globe are in a pattern called a grid Latitude- drawn in an East & West direction, but are labeled in degrees North or South Longitude- drawn in a North & South direction, but are labeled in degrees East or West Cartography – the study of maps & map making

Making Maps Equator- an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North Pole & South Pole Divides the globe into Northern & Southern Hemispheres Prime Meridian- an imaginary line that is drawn from the North Pole to the South Pole Runs through Greenwich England Divides the globe into Eastern & Western Hemispheres

Making Maps

Understanding Maps Legend- is a guide that identifies symbols used on a map Scale- helps determine the real distance between points on a map Compass Rose- has arrows that point in all four cardinal directions ( North, East, South, West)
