Health and Safety Read task book Identify LO that you think will be easier/harder on the handout

Learning outcomes: 1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services 1.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely 1.3 Identify sources of current guidance for planning healthy and safe environments and services 1.4 Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service

Learning outcomes cont 2.1 Demonstrate how to identify potential hazards to the health, safety and security of children or young people, families and other visitors and colleagues 2.2 Demonstrate the ability to deal with hazards in the work setting or in off site visits 2.3 Undertake a health and safety risk assessment in own work setting or service illustrating how its implementation will reduce risk

Record your ideas on the sheet Feed back to the group 1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services In pairs/groups, think about every aspect of H&S in schools that you can think of Record your ideas on the sheet Feed back to the group Use these ideas to formulate your answer – eg ‘There are a wide range of factors to consider when planning safe environments for children to learn......’

1.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely Discussion: What strategies do schools use to maintain safe environments? Think of as many as you can How are all the users of a school building made aware of potential dangers and encouraged to work safely? Will it be different methods for different people? Walk around the building using the handout to look for signs and signals for H&S

(You can tackle these LO separately or together) 1.3 Identify sources of current guidance for planning healthy and safe environments and services 1.4 Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service (You can tackle these LO separately or together) What laws/codes of practice affect H&S in schools? How are these filtered down to be relevant to each setting?

Task: In groups explore the roles and responsibilities of each example

It is mandatory for a school to have a health and safety policy 1.4 Explain how current health and safety legislation, policies and procedures are implemented in own work setting or service It is mandatory for a school to have a health and safety policy Get your school’s policy and summarise the key points

Section 2 – learning journal(s) Look at the sample learning journal Does it meet all three outcomes? How could it be improved? Suggest details to add to fully meet the LO

Any questions?
