Open textbooks have the potential to lower the cost of attendance for NDUS students.  North Dakota University System has joined The University of Minnesota Open Textbook Network, a partnership of more than 75 institutions nationwide. The Open Textbook Library at the University of Minnesota houses a collection of openly licensed, peer reviewed, free textbooks. Faculty at the University of Minnesota have saved more than $500,000 in textbook costs for students. Dr. Tanya Spilovoy, Director of Distance Education and State Authorization, attended the Open Textbook Network Summer Institute this week at the U of M. Thanks to support from this Committee and funding provided by the Legislature, NDUS is launching its own Open Educational Resources Initiative.   NDUS will host the Open Educational Resources (OER) Summit at Valley City State University October 6 &7. Faculty, librarians, and technologists will be invited to learn from national experts. Training on these resources will be provided by U of M staff, Dr. Spilovoy, and others. In addition, the faculty baseline survey report and cost data will be published this fall.    Example of our progress: In the Fall of 2014 Lake Region State College didn't have any faculty utilizing open educational resources (OER). Spring semester LRSC had 1 faculty utilize OER's. Speech instructor, Teresa Tande, used a free online textbook for Comm 110. Thirty-six students were enrolled in 2 sections and each student saved $67.25 by using the OER book for a total savings of $2,421.. Biology instructor, Michelle Murphy, published a Concepts of Biology textbook available for her students to download free of charge for Biology 111 fall semester 2015. Each student will save $118.25.

As you know, the needs in western North Dakota are great. Here are two examples of things that happened just in the past year. As you know, the Train/ND program is very successful in training thousands of people already in the workforce. In 2014, TrainND served nearly 19,000 people in 1,200 companies. Last year, BSC and DSU joined forces and held 12 training events for 17 businesses in Dickinson. DSU’s CPA experience is also serving a need in western ND. One of the students in the DSU CPA experience program said that the flexible program allows her to put in class time while working with her busy schedule. She said it is providing her excellent preparation for the CPA exam. The program won an international award for innovation. The George Krull/Grant Thornton Teaching Innovation Award is one of only three accounting curriculum awards bestowed annually by the 127-year-old AICPA. The organization is the world’s largest member association representing the accounting profession, with more than 400,000 members in 145 countries.
